Foster to Adopt
We’re proud to offer our ‘Foster to Adopt’ program – 4 easy steps to adoption.
1. Visit
The best way to meet your new pet is by coming to the shelter and visiting our available cats & dogs.
2. Apply
Once you’ve made a decision, you’ll need to fill out an application.
3. Foster
Once your application is approved, you enter our ‘Foster to Adopt’ program.
4. Adopt
After 30 days in foster you finalize the adoption!

Adoption Fees
Small Dogs & Puppies – $425
Large Adult Dogs – $325
Cats & Kittens – $190
Adoption fees include the following:
- General Health Assessment
- Vaccinations – (including rabies vaccine)
- De-worming
- Annual City Tag (where applicable)
- Microchip
- All adopted animals are spayed/neutered (speak to our staff for details)
- Pet Valu Pet Parent Guide (includes helpful information, plus great coupons)
*Please note that a mandatory $100 deposit is required for all dog adoptions as part of our Foster to Adopt program.
*Please do not forget to bring a new collar and leash for your new dog or a carrier for your new cat!
Market Costs vs. Adoption Fees
The following is an overview of what you are paying for when you adopt an animal from the North Bay and District Humane Society. (Costs are based on averages only, and may fluctuate.)

Animals receive a general temperament assessment prior to being placed for adoption. This translates into much-needed information about the animal in order to make the best possible match between the potential family and the adoptee. |

All animals receive a routine general health assessment prior to adoption. Our Veterinarian will examine those animals requiring a diagnosis or prescription. |

All animals receive medication for internal parasites. When an animal is suspected of having other parasites, a stool sample may be taken and examined. |

Ear mites are common in cats. The ears are checked and if there are signs of contamination they are treated. |

All cats are routinely treated for fleas. Dogs are treated if they have fleas. |

The first vaccination is given and if the animal is within our facility for any extended period of time, they will receive a booster (2nd vaccination). |

All animals are implanted with a microchip (a permanent form of identification) prior to being adopted. |

With each adoption, your animal is provided with a current city license (as applicable). These can be otherwise purchased annually from the NBHS or from City Hall. |

All of our cats and dogs leaving the shelter are sterilized. Those animals that are too young will be provided with an appointment for the procedure at a later date at no additional cost. |
