North Bay & District Humane Society Transitioning Out of Provincial Law Enforcement

New toll-free number available 24/7 to report animal welfare concerns

(North Bay, ON) – In March 2019, the Ontario SPCA announced its intention to transition all investigations and animal welfare legislation enforcement to the Ontario government. As a result of this decision, the North Bay and District Humane Society no longer has investigative authority under provincial animal welfare legislation and will cease to enforce animal welfare laws.

Effective June 29, 2019, Ontario’s interim animal protection model will come into effect to keep animals safe as the province transitions to a new system that is more robust, transparent and accountable. At this time, the North Bay Humane Society will refer all calls to the Ministry of the Solicitor General’s new toll-free number (1-833-926-4625) where calls will be dispatched for response to the most appropriate local authority.

Helping animals in need remains the overriding priority for the North Bay and District Humane Society. The transition from provincial law enforcement will allow the North Bay Humane Society to focus on adoptions, spay/neuter services, animal transfers, community-based mobile services as well as a planned adoption centre expansion.

Animal Control Services will still be available including municipal by-law enforcement and after-hours emergency services in the City of North Bay, the Municipality of West Nipissing, the Municipality of East Ferris and the Township of Bonfield. If you encounter a stray or injured dog or cat where an owner cannot be found, please contact the North Bay Humane Society by calling 705-474-1251.

Since 1954, the North Bay and District Humane Society has been a key service provider within our community. The mission of the Humane Society is to provide for and protect animals in North Bay & District while advocating for community education on animal welfare issues and concerns.
