Foster Program
At the North Bay Humane Society, we are dedicated to providing a safe haven for animals in need, and our volunteer fostering program plays a crucial role in this mission. By fostering kittens and puppies who are too young for adoption, mothers with young litters, and pets recovering from illness or injury, you can help save lives and prepare these animals for their future homes.
What Does Fostering Involve
1. Socialization of Young Animals
Kittens and puppies require love and attention to thrive during their early developmental stages. As a foster caregiver, you’ll help them become well-adjusted companions by:
- Providing Affection: Regular handling and cuddling help them build trust and feel secure.
- Encouraging Play: Engaging in safe playtime activities fosters their confidence and social skills.
- Exposure to New Experiences: Introducing them to different sounds, sights, and environments helps them adapt to the world around them.
2. Caring for Mothers and Their Litters
Fostering a mother with her young litter is an incredibly rewarding experience. Your role will include:
- Creating a Comfortable Space: Setting up a safe and quiet area for the mother and her babies to thrive.
- Monitoring Health: Keeping an eye on the mother’s needs, ensuring she has food, water, and a calm environment, while also watching over the growth and well-being of her young ones.
- Supporting the Weaning Process: Assisting as the mother transitions her puppies or kittens to solid food.
3. Assisting Recuperating Animals
Many animals in our care require time to heal from sickness or injury. As a foster for these pets, you’ll:
- Provide a Healing Environment: Offer a calm and loving space where they can recuperate comfortably.
- Monitor Their Condition: Keep track of any changes in health and communicate with our team for any necessary veterinary follow-ups.
- Offer Companionship: Being present can greatly reduce their stress and anxiety, aiding in their recovery.
